Hot as Hell

I suppose I should watch my commode-mouth in case there are children reading my blog (among my 25 regular followers), but today was probably the hottest day of an already hot summer; it hit 30C in the backyard. Hot as H-E-doublehockeysticks. And according to Environment Canada's monthly temperature forecast for August, it will continue:

Sammy and I camped out in mummy's backyard last night, and we hit the beach in Dundee on the way home just after lunch. The water was so warm it was barely even refreshing. Cheryl and I have fond  memories of swimming lessons at this beach when we were children; waaaaaay back then (I will not tell how long ago!) the water was so cold that skinny little Cheryl had chronic hypothermia and couldn't stop shivering long enough to become a proficient swimmer; I was better insulated. In more recent years, we have found the Caribbean Sea much more to our liking. But today the Bras d'Or was bearable.

In this heat, one can practically see the cucumbers growing by the minute in the greenhouse. Peppers are turning red and orange (the long slim reds, jalapenos, and capsicum will soon make hot as hell salsa) and the tomatoes are coming along nicely as well. Soil dries out fast on days like this, so Sammy came out to help me water this evening after it cooled off to 27C in the dreamhouse. We had dessert out there too - a little glass of Ernest & Julio Gallo Chardonnay and Queso de Cabra al Vino which I found at Sobeys in Pictou. (Thank you Sobeys for carrying cheese from Manchego, even if it costs $39.40/kg here.)

  3. Did you see the article in the CH about Danny Dill's pumpkins this year? The hot weather has them about 3 weeks ahead of schedule. He was pictured kneeling against a pumpkin the size of a stability ball that has been only growing for one month, AND he had a grapefruit sized pumpkin in one hand that GERMINATED four days ago!!
