#1 Beach

A couple of weeks ago Daniel and I did a little road trip down the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia (Marine Drive) and stopped at a couple of famous provincial park beaches just to see what all the hype is about.

Our first scenic diversion was out to Clam Harbour Beach which was beautiful despite the overcast day. But it's 84km from Dartmouth, in the middle of nowhere (and that's saying something for someone from a remote corner of Cape Breton). This beach also has a provincial park campground and interpretive centre, but it was virtually empty that day. However, next Sunday, August 18th, is the Annual Clam Harbour Sandcastle Competition and it sounds like the beach will be much busier than when we visited.

where are the clams?

Next stop was Lawrencetown Beach, renowned in NS for surfing - and it's conveniently close to Halifax. Lots of cobblestones on this beach - really lots. I didn't swim at either of these beaches; it was overcast (but warm) and I was bravely fighting a summer cold.

We decided that we like our local Point Michaud Beach best beach of all; sure, we're probably biased, but its 3km curve of powdery sand backed by beautiful green dune grasses and happening surfing scene makes it all that and a bag of potato chips.

#1 Point Michaud - such a beach!
August 24th just happens to be the 10th Annual Point Michaud Surf Classic (click for deets). Surfing and music events are planned for the entire weekend both at Point Michaud and at Battery Park and other fine establishments in nearby St. Peter's. See you there!
