Putting the X back in Xmas

Time for another onslaught of pagan celebrations aimed squarely at Putting the X back in Xmas: Yuletide, Winter Solstice, and Wassailing. Our last pagan holiday - Hallowe'ek - was epic, but we're going to try to top that.

Friday, December 21 2012, we’re going to celebrate the end of the world winter solstice witha bit of a Wassail in the Riviera.

Checklist:
  Wassail
  Food
  Fire pit
  People

The tradition of Wassailing began with the Norse, and Beowulf took it to England and something about a king and a cute princess. Most of my facts are skewed, but you can read the real story here.

The traditional Wassail Party menu features meat pies and wassail (a hot grog made with cider, spices, and other goodies); activities include toasting to health of friends, lighting fires (controlled) to welcome back the yule sun, and singing to the trees in the orchards and vineyards to wake them from their sleep so that they will produce fruit again in the coming season. Traditionally the Wassail does not involve playing cards, but neither does Day of the Dead.
Preparations are underway: word is out, lights are up, I have found a delicious-sounding Wassail Bowl recipe, and Daniel has begun making the meat pies (conveniently also an Acadian tradition).
