Farley's Beach in the Fog by Bike

The entire coast has been ensconced in fog for days, but if one keeps waiting for a fine day here it might never come. Forget about it - we tossed the mountain bikes in the back of the truck, hoisted in Sammy, and headed down the Grand Gully Road to what we call "Farley's Beach".

Farley's Beach was once owned by author Farley Mowat, but in 2007 he donated it all to the Nova Scotia Nature Trust. More info on Farley Mowat and his connection to the Riviera can be found in an archived issue of the local news tabloid The River Round-up. Farley's Beach is a barrier beach, backed by a lagoon that connects to a large forested drumlin. Silver Donald Cameron (who is a great friend of Mowat's) wrote a treatise on the beaches in our part of the world called The Living Beach - worth a read if you are interested in how our coastlines are shaped by the sea.

Through the fog we could hear (but not see) the lobster boats out hauling their traps in St. Peter's Bay. We instantly decided to go down to the canal tomorrow to get a last feed of lobster (see tomorrow's blog post).

The biking is hard on the beach gravel, until you get to the drumlin; then, the road rises steeply up a hill into a grassy field. Here, we found some deer a-grazing ... the same ones we often see from our kitchen after dinner.
at first I thought they were giraffes
Had we kept going (and we will another day) the road goes across the hill and down to the beach on the other side. Cheryl and I kayaked over there last year and found what seems like a seabird sanctuary, very shallow and protected tidal water with shellfish everywhere - definitely a spot to be explored again soon. But by this time Sammy was getting tired, so we turned around and headed back through the field down the hill.

Our great bike ride justified eating this delicious pan-seared maple-glazed salmon for dinner, after which we jumped in the car and went to a jam session at our friends' house.
